Teacher facing life jail term, for allegedly strangling son to death

An Arabic teacher (Bashiru Isah) has been confirmed to remain in police custody by a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Minna, for allegedly strangling his own son. The 38-years-old, Isah was indicted on a one count charge of culpable homicide, punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law. The Police prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, said in court that Aisha Bashiru, wife of the suspect, reported the matter at Lapai Police Division on Sept. 19. Danladi said the complainant alleged that on the same date at about 1:15 am, her husband, a resident of Ebbo village in Lapai, took their son into his room and strangled him to death with his hands without any reasonable excuse. However, the Magistrate, Maryam King, said the court would not record the plea of the accused because it lacked jurisdiction to try the case. King therefore directed the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice. The case has been adjourned to Oct. 26,

ECOWAS to train 12,000 pupils on technical education

The Economic Community of West African States, in partnership with a technology firm, Skill ‘G’ Nigeria Limited , says it will train no fewer than 12,000 pupils in the sub-region on technical education and science annually. According to a statement from ECOWAS , in order to achieve this target, the organisation held a two-day stakeholders’ meeting on education on Thursday and Friday in Abuja to draw out a road map. The theme of the meeting was, “Better harmonisation of the educational system of the region and the development of the human capital based on knowledge economy.” The Managing Director, Skill ‘G’ Limited , Dr Gregory Ibe , told journalists after the meeting that the firm would “design the strategies for ECOWAS technical and vocational education as well as skills improvement for employability in the region.” He said, “ ECOWAS decided to partner with us in the delivery of specialised vocational education in 15 member countries. We can’t pay workers’ salaries, Benue govt. declares

BENUE State governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, has disclosed that he is unable to pay salaries of workers for about four months now because of the harsh economic situation that has taken its toll on the finances of the government. He also said the state suspended the conduct of local government elections and appointed caretaker committees because of lack of fund. Ortom spoke while fielding questions from State House correspondents shortly after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa on Monday. He revealed that since August 2015, allocation from the Federal Government to the state had been on the average of N4 billion while the wage bill for a month is N7.8 billion. He said: “We will conduct elections as soon as we have the resources. The point is: we were given a bill of N1 billion to conduct elections when I cannot pay salaries. “I’m down by four months. Kano truck accident leaves 19 people dead

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says 19 persons have died in a ghastly motor accident along Kano – Katsina Road. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the FRSC Sector Command in the state, Mr Kabir Ibrahim-Daura, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Saturday. Kabir-Daura said that the incident occurred near Lambun Garban Bichi, on the outskirts of Bichi town, around 8:30 a.m. on Friday. According to him, the incident happened when a Peugeot J5 bus and a Toyota C20 bus had a head-on collision when one of the drivers of the vehicles wanted to overtake the other vehicle at a sharp bend corner. Court remands UNIOSUN student in Jail for stabbing colleague to death

Four students of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Osun State were on Friday remanded in prison by a magistrates’ court sitting in Osogbo, for allegedly belonging to a secret cult, and also for illegally being in possession of firearms. The suspects were: Olabanji Michael,23, Adewusi Michael,23, Oyinbo Kehinde,21 and Afolabi Yusuf,23.
