Morata hits hat-trick as Chelsea defeat Stoke 4-0

Alvaro Morata scored a hat-trick as third-placed Chelsea kept up their pursuit of Manchester's Premier League pace-setters by routing Stoke City 4-0 today. Having taken four points from home games against Arsenal and Manchester United, Stoke could hardly have anticipated their terrible start when they conceded on 83 seconds to a neat finish from Morata, his fourth goal of the season and first with his boot. But without three defenders including Kurt Zouma, Stoke struggled to stifle Chelsea's counter-attacks and conceded again after half-an-hour when Darren Fletcher mistakenly chested the ball into the path of Pedro, whose right-foot shot gave keeper Jack Butland no chance. Chelsea wrapped up victory with 12 minutes remaining thanks to more dreadful Stoke defending and another fine Morata finish, first dinking the ball over Butland and then tapping in to take his season's tally to six. Odemwingie signs contract extension at Stoke City

Peter Odemwingie Stoke City have been handed a pre-season boost after striker Peter Odemwingie signed a new one-year contract extension. The Nigerian will remain at the Britannia Stadium until the end of the 2015/16 campaign, but his stay in the Potteries could be prolonged with the potential of a further 12 months. Stoke have rewarded Odemwingie with a new contract extension after he successfully recovered from a serious knee injury that had kept him out for the majority of last season. After eight months on the side lines, the 33-year-old returned to first-team return in the April draw with Sunderland and went on to make eight Premier League appearances last season.
