Prices of Maize, Rice and other food commodities to rise in December, 2022 – Survey

One of Nigeria’s commodities market players, AFEX has forecasted a surge in prices of six food commodities, namely maize, paddy rice, sorghum, soybean, cocoa and sesame by the end of December 2022 to the first half of 2023. AFEX’s forecast is contained in its 2022 Wet Season Crop Production Report unveiled at a hybrid event hosted at the firm’s head office in Abuja on Wednesday. The report said maize which faces a projected decline in production levels of up to 14% will reach a higher average price point ranging between N214, 980/metric ton ($486.72) and N220,000/metric ton ($498.09) by the end of the fourth quarter (Q4) 2022. According to the report, this is compared to an average price of ($475.97) N210, 229/metric ton in Q4 2021, and projected that soybean price will rise by 6% by May 2023. CSOs (Civil Society Organizations) frown at removal of sex education from curriculum

On Thursday, November 3, the Federal Government directed the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to delete sex education from the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC). The NERDC is an agency of the Federal Government that is charged with the responsibility of implementing educational policies in the country. Headed by its executive secretary, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, the organisation, which prides itself as the think-tank of Nigerian education and development, was formally recognised by law in 1988 viz an enabling Decree No. 53 (now ACT No. 53) that merged four educational research and development bodies into a single agency. The Nigerian Federal Government intends to stop the mass migration going on in the country. The Minister of State for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Henry Ikoh made the announcement.    Nigeria in the past few years has developed a migration problem. President Buhari asks Water Resources Minister to produce flood-prevention plan

The President asks the minister to produce the plan within 90 days. President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu to develop a ‘Comprehensive Plan of Action for Preventing Flood Disaster’ in the country. The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Adamu Garba made this known on Monday, October 24, 2022, via his official Twitter handle. This is coming weeks after flooding has destroyed homes and farmlands in many states and communities across the country. The flooding which affected many communities in Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, and many other states in the North has reportedly claimed over 600 lives. ECOWAS to train 12,000 pupils on technical education

The Economic Community of West African States, in partnership with a technology firm, Skill ‘G’ Nigeria Limited , says it will train no fewer than 12,000 pupils in the sub-region on technical education and science annually. According to a statement from ECOWAS , in order to achieve this target, the organisation held a two-day stakeholders’ meeting on education on Thursday and Friday in Abuja to draw out a road map.  The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) said on Wednesday it would go ahead with its planned nationwide strike from Thursday. The group's spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojugbana, said chairmen and secretaries in its four zones and branches have concluded plans to ensure a complete shutdown of the country's oil and gas industry operations and activities.
